Dal Makhani

Dal (Lentil) Makhani (Buttery) is one of the popular Punjabi dish and my favorite too. Kidney beans and Black grams are the 2 main ingredients in this recipe. But I use whole red lentils (masoor) instead of black gram.

Ingredients:

Whole red lentils ( masoor) 1 cup
Kidney Beans (Rajma) ½ cup
Tomato large size 1
Onion medium size 1
Minced ginger 1 tsp
Minced garlic 1 tsp
Green chillies 3-4
Red chilli powder ½ tsp
Turmeric powder ¼ tsp
Garam masala ¼ tsp (optional)
Cumin seeds ¼ tsp
Chopped cilantro ¼ cup
Butter 1-2 tsp
Salt
Oil

Method:

1. Soak Kidney beans and whole red lentils for 8 hrs or overnight.

2. Wash soaked kidney beans and whole red lentils. Pressure cook kidney beans and whole red lentils with little water, salt and red chilli powder till 3 whistle. Cook for another 20 minutes in low heat.

3. Finely chop the tomato, onion and green chillies.

4. Heat oil in a pan add cumin seeds, green chillies fry them. Add minced ginger, garlic, onion one after the other fry them till transparent. Add tomato and salt, cook for few minutes.

5. Add cooked kidney beans and whole red lentils. Add chilli powder, turmeric powder and garam masala mix well. Add 2 cups of water. Cook for 20-30 minutes in medium heat.

6. Finally add cilantro and butter.

7. Serve Dal Makhani with rice, roti or chapatti.
